Our Host Families

Abbey Guardians host families are a fundamental part of the service we offer. When our students are not in school (exeat weekends, half terms & holidays) they will stay with one of our host families.

All of our host families undergo background checks which include character references and Enhanced Police DBS checks (Disclosure and Barring Services, formally known as CRB's or Criminal Record Bureau checks). We inspect all prospective host families homes prior to any students being placed with them and take them through our formal interview process. They will be given guidance and literature which will help them to integrate their student into family life.

We regularly visit and inspect the homes to make sure they are comfortable and safe - often when students are on a homestay and always during their first stay. Because we ourselves have hosted, we make sure that all our host families maintain the high standard of care that has earned us such a good reputation with students and parents alike.

Typically, our host families will have children of their own and feel the benefit to their own family from hosting international students. We also have families whose children have grown up and left the home but still feel that they want to contribute to the care and wellbeing of international students. In any case, we use our experience to match the student to the correct family - in many cases long lasting friendships are formed between students, parents and families which span the globe. It is truly wonderful to witness the positive effect hosting has on students and the families they stay with.

We regularly ask all our students to feedback on their host families and vice versa so that any issues may be corrected as quickly as possible. In the unusual event that a student wishes to change host family, this can be dealt with immediately. Information about the sudents host family will be made available to the parents as soon as they are selected along with contact details if necessary.
